Impact-resistant shingles: know the tradeoffs
A rating helps compare products. It does not promise a storm outcome.
Ask which test and which product
Impact classifications refer to specific products and test methods. Ask for the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact product being proposed.
Discuss the installed system
Underlayment, flashing, ventilation and correct installation still matter. A single product label does not describe every component on the roof.
Separate resistance from immunity
Impact-resistant roofing is not hail-proof. Storm characteristics, roof condition and other factors can affect performance.
Verify any insurance credit
Ask your insurer whether the exact product qualifies, what documentation is required and whether your policy has relevant limitations. Do not assume a universal discount.
Check the evidence for the exact shingle
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) tests retail shingle products using impacts designed to reproduce natural hail damage. Its ratings compare dents, tears and granule loss by product and test year.
Compare current IBHS shingle performance ratings ↗. Match the product name in the results to the product in your written proposal; do not substitute a rating for a different product from the same brand.
